The Story Behind the Music
Before Euge Groove became one of contemporary jazz's most recognizable saxophone voices, Steven Eugene Grove spent years learning what it meant to serve the music. His early professional career placed him alongside an extraordinarily wide range of performers, giving him experience in jazz, funk, R&B, and pop long before he stepped forward as a solo artist.
That experience matters when listening to his records. Euge doesn't approach a song as an excuse to showcase technique. He understands arrangement, pacing, and the importance of leaving room for a melody to breathe. Years spent as a touring and session musician—including time with Tower of Power and work connected to artists such as Tina Turner, Joe Cocker, Elton John, Richard Marx, and others—helped shape a player equally comfortable delivering power, restraint, and soul.
When his self-titled debut arrived in 2000, Euge Groove began establishing an identity that was distinctly his own. The foundation was contemporary jazz, but the music carried a pronounced R&B sensibility and a deep respect for groove. Albums including Livin' Large, Born 2 Groove, Sunday Morning, House of Groove, Still Euge, and Groove On! continued to develop that approach, earning him a sustained presence within contemporary jazz.
What gives the music its staying power, however, is Euge's ability to communicate. His saxophone can growl, whisper, celebrate, and reflect—sometimes within the same performance.
